My friend’s story began when she answered a call, volunteered when no one else would and did her best (free of charge) to help another person in need. As amazing as her sales career is, her true success has been her behind-the-scenes efforts. Here’s a sampling of that story.
A medical professional was seeking a home and contacted M. Her nature is to dive in headfirst. She researched neighborhoods, schools, family needs/wants, and price range. A home was found and the sale was closed. Years later, he contacted her again, this time as a seller. He had accepted a job at M.D. Anderson, a renowned cancer hospital in Houston, Texas and needed to relocate as soon as possible. She got busy, found a buyer and closed. Before leaving town, he said, ‘M, if you ever need me, just call and I will be there for you.’ She said, ‘I hope I never have to make that call.’
A short time later she went in for a checkup. They found cancer; it was aggressive. She immediately called her friend. He said to come quickly. Another friend with a private plane flew her to Houston where she was admitted, tested and prepped. The surgery was successful. It saved her life. Since that time, she has assisted several other cancer victims in getting help at M.D. Anderson.
Fast forward. Her once-a-week lunch pals were meeting. M wanted a burger; no one else did. She told them to go ahead; she’d catch up later. We have enough burger places to feed a small country. On that day, she chose Freddy’s Steakburgers. Her waitress was sweet, but her mouth was a wreck. When her food came, M asked the waitress if she could talk. She sat, and M gently asked about her life. The young lady was married, trying to go to nursing school and build a life after a meth addiction. M said, ‘I want to help you. I have a friend who’s an oral surgeon. I’m going to send you to him.’
Afterward their office visit, the surgeon (yes, another real estate client) called and asked, ‘What do you want me to do?’ M told him the young lady’s story then added, ‘I want her to have new teeth.’ Her friend said OK and even agreed to help with costs. Today, the young lady has her degree, leads the nursing department at a care facility, has children, a strong marriage and a smile as beautiful as her spirit. M has quietly done similar deeds, blessing others because she’s been blessed.
After Jesus received Mary’s message, He said her story would be repeated down through history. What God did with Mary, He did with a shepherd boy named David. What God did with David, He did with an 80-year-old man named Moses. What God did with Moses, He did with my friend, M. What God did (and is still doing) with M, He can do with us.
The next time the phone rings, or we’re asked to help someone, or God plops an opportunity in our lap, and we’re faced with what to do, let’s do what we can and do it the best that we can. We never know where God will take us. And remember – you are greatly loved!
