A Passion for Life

Being an eighty-five-year-old male with a bad back, makes it somewhat challenging to muster the memories of my passion for life, but it was real, and it was really good. And being the inveterate daydreamer that I am, I can still recall the wistful yearning – the enthusiasm for my experiencing life the way it was. The trait of “a passion for life” is not just about being energetic or optimistic, although that’s certainly part of it, but it’s more of a mindset where we seek for meaning, joy, and growth in the everyday events of life. This mindset has a natural curiosity and sense of wonder. People with a passion for life tend to be genuinely curious – finding beauty in small things, asking questions, exploring ideas, and excitement in the new and the unknown.

“There are some things kept secret by God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of His law.” (Deut. 29:29, ESV)

Those with a passion for life will display a deep appreciation for all the surprising discoveries in our lives. These folks are often grounded in the present and are genuinely grateful for what life offers. Whether a good conversation, a mesmerizing sunset, a delicious meal, or overcoming a challenge.

“Give thanks for everything.” (Eph. 5:20, NLT)
“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will.” (1 Thess. 5:18, NLT)

These special people feel things fully, allowing themselves to be moved – by art, nature, music, and people. They don’t just observe life; they participate emotionally – enthusiastically. Whether it’s travel, learning, or creating, theirs is a longing for living life fully, not just existing. Flexibility is also a part of this mindset, meaning that even in difficulties, life is still worth it.

We only go ‘round once, but if we do it right, once is enough.
