Lessons I Learned at Disney World (Part 1)

Wisdom is defined as ‘the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement.’ Solomon wrote that wisdom is available to everyone, everywhere, all the time. With wisdom comes the lessons we learn, put into practice, and teach to others. Where do we gain these lessons? If we’re observant, they can come from most anywhere. For example, the article from which I received the most feedback was on lessons we can learn from dogs. Being a dog person, I was glad to know there are others among us!

A few years ago, I was blessed with 2 impactful learning experiences (I’ll share the 1st now and 2nd at a later time). My daughter treated us to a week at Disney World, the Most Magical Place on Earth. It lived up to its billing. I’ve never seen money disappear so quickly!

It truly was a wonderful week. We enjoyed every day. One evening in our room, I opened my laptop and tried to put into words what lessons I had learned. As I look over that list, I’m convinced these fit any organization involved with serving people. Here are 6 bits of wisdom or lessons we can learn from a mouse: 2 today, 2 next week, 2 the week after then a summary. ‘Smile, breathe and believe in magic.’ – Mickey Mouse

1. They were united in their goal to make me feel special.

Eph. 4:3 “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

From the moment I entered the transportation area of the airport, I was met by their representatives. Everyone smiled, everyone was polite and everyone welcomed me. They also treated everyone else the same way. The bus driver made me feel like I was the head of state entering a limo. I was greeted at the hospitality desk with a smile and warm greeting. Every question was answered with politeness. Every courtesy was extended from housekeeping to security to park staff to park facilitators. Would I want to go back? Absolutely! They treated me with courtesy and respect.

2. They did their job as if it was the most important one.

Rom. 12:4 “Each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function.”

We took a morning tour of the history of Christmas. The tour involved 2 of their facilitators (it was obvious these folks were in management), a bus driver, 2 other group organizers and various employees at 3 parks, 1 hotel and 1 storage facility. In workplace lingo, we encountered everyone from salaried management to hourly seasonal workers. Yet, there was never a sense of anyone being more important than another. And, more remarkably, those who swept the grounds and the man who drove our bus approached their work as diligently as those well-dressed, long-tenured higher-ups. They all approached their work as part of a team effort; at the same time, they did their jobs as though the park could not function without them. I found that so impressive.

‘See you next time’ – Mickey Mouse. And remember, you are greatly loved!
